Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college.

On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just.

From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul“, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.

Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

Chapter Basileus ---August 2025-2027

It is one of my greatest honors to serve as Basileus of the Upsilon Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Since 1992, I have been privileged to serve as a Brother across six states, five districts, and four countries. For the past nine years, Upsilon Beta Beta has been my home, and during this time, our bond of brotherhood has grown stronger than ever.

As a chapter, we are dedicated to fulfilling the requirements of our mandated programs, including Achievement Week, the College Endowment Fund, Fatherhood and Mentoring, Health Initiatives, NAACP, Memorial Service, Reclamation and Retention, Scholarship, Social Action, STEM, Talent Hunt, and Voter Registration. Beyond these mandates, we actively support our community through initiatives such as providing school supplies, mentoring students, Omega Read, and Adopt-A-Highway.

We are also proud to partner with the 501(c)(3) Omega Men of Horry County to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to families across Horry County, ensuring no family is left behind. Our ongoing mission is to strive for excellence in all that we do, serving both our Brotherhood and the greater community with purpose and distinction.

Bro. JD

CHAPTER HISTORY

A Brief History of the Upsilon Beta Beta Chapter of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. During the 1970s and early 1980s, many graduate Brothers residing in Horry County maintain membership in the graduate chapters of Omega Psi Phi in neighboring Marion and Georgetown Counties. These Brothers had excellent experiences working with those chapters in serving those communities including service to Horry County.

The Brothers from Horry County were in sufficient number and determination to charter a chapter in Horry County (Conway).  This chapter would be able to better serve many communities across Horry County. Plus, the number of unaffiliated Brothers helped to drive the energy to form the Horry County chapter membership.

All required forms were completed and submitted to the fraternity’s district (6th) and national governing bodies to charter the Upsilon Beta Beta Chapter in 1983.  This new chapter composed mostly of well-known educators and recent college graduates became the strength of what would be a viable organization in Horry County.

Each month, the Chapter met at homes of Brothers.  There were meetings held at the McKiever Funeral Home, where two Brothers maintained ownership in a family business.  Upsilon Beta Beta Chapter sponsored many programs and activities that were fundraisers (Mardi Gras) for scholarships and the recognition of people (Citizen of the Year) doing extraordinary work in the community.

Since 1983, the Chapter has enjoyed extraordinary leadership and commitment from Brothers determined to build on its continued success today.
